Window Cushions: A Guide for Your Window Seating Area

When it comes to a window seat, they look great aesthetically and are also brilliant for practical reasons and using up space. Window seating areas provide extra seating as well as additional storage. Here we take a look at how best to use your window seating area.

Incorporating a window seat

One of the easiest ways to include a window seat in your property is to ask your building designer or architect to incorporate one into your home. The interior design process often overlooks use of a window seat, when really it’s a great addition to any room. A window seat can make the window itself look attractive and is also a way to save space. If you have a window seat in your bedroom, there’s no need to have any extra seating or a separate bedroom chair or furniture, you can build drawers into the seat, this will provide you with extra storage space for your clothes, shoes and accessories.

So if you are moving or considering a refurb at your home, we recommend considering adding a window seat to the plans.

Maybe your new home design leaves you with awkward corners, instead of leaving this area empty, you could add a cosy window seating nook.

Window seat joinery

Some people choose to build bookcases around their windows then leave the gap under the window, why do this when you can fill the gap with a window seat. It doesn’t need to be huge, but is a great place to grab a book and read, get a custom window seat cushion and some scatter cushions to make the space cosy and comfortable.

A joiner can design and fit the window seat for you, we advise that you consider including the seat detail into the rest of the room, for example the window seating wood could match your skirting boards.

A waiting space

A stair landing is a great place to add a window seat, this is something that you should include in your renovation or building plans, you will need to make sure that the landing is big enough to accommodate the window seat. A stairwell landing isn’t somewhere where you’ll want to relax and enjoy a cup of tea, but it will look great and be a focal point of your landing area, simply add upholstered seat cushions or scatter cushions.

Size of the window seat

While there are no rules for this, a window seat can be any size, for a small filler for a little nook and cranny, or a large lounge style seat. We recommend that your window seat is around 40cm deep and the seat height should be 50cm. If your intention for the seat is a sofa, this should be around 60cm to 70cm, this is just to make sure it’s comfortable.

A little window seat could be 30cm in depth, however we recommend that you are careful with the overall size of the seat so that it doesn’t look out of proportion.

Cushions and cushion covers to suit

Window seat cushions should be around 10cm high and the foam should be high density, you can also add a cushion to top up the phone that will give you a good quality sofa seat cushion. You should also consider matching the seat cushion cover to the rest of the room or area, for example any upholstery or curtains. Here at The Cushion Guys we are experts in cushion covers and we provide a range of cushions suited for window seats, just get in touch today.

We also recommend that you consider outdoor fabrics for window seats, window seats will get lots of sunlight which means the cushion may fade. With this in mind we advise using a fabric that includes built in UV protection.

We also provide upholstery services.
