Refilling your Sofa Cushions? A Guide!

There can be many reasons for refilling your sofa cushions, whether it’s to restore the shape and structure, or simply to replace worn down material over time. The type of stuffing you use depends on what’s already being used inside the cushion, though you can swap it out if needs be. Here at The Cushion Guys, our experienced team has put together this guide to help you refill your sofa cushions.

Types of Sofa Cushion Stuffing

Before you start the refilling process, it’s essential to understand the kinds of stuffing available on the market for your sofa cushions. Whether you’re looking to keep your current filling the same or switch it up with more modern material, this list is what you need to decide on the best sofa cushion filling for you!

Sofa Cushion Replacements

Hollow Fibre

Getting its name from the open threads used to create the fibre, this sofa cushion filling is light and airy, meaning your sofa cushions will be softer and springier than other options available. Air can move freely through the hollow fibre, making the material warm and breathable. This filling is famous for various types of bedding, such as duvets and sleeping bags, but works great as a sofa cushion filler.

Polyester

A synthetic blend that is commonly used in sofa cushions, polyester is a budget-friendly filling option for various reasons. It’s cheap to buy, and you won’t require a large amount to fill your sofa cushions if they contain polyester. This material comes in various blends, and you can find the perfect blend for you, though many sofa cushion manufacturers won’t state the specific blend they use.

Down/Feathers

Perhaps the most comfortable sofa cushion filling available, down is typically used to fill pillows to provide a blissful night’s sleep. Still, it can be used on your sofa cushions to provide a quiet place to sit. However, down isn’t the cheapest option on this list, and as comfortable as it may be, there isn’t a lot of spinal support offered, which can lead to poor posture and back pain later down the line.

Foam

There are a couple of different options to choose from when it comes to looking into a foam filling for your sofa cushions, including:

High-Density Polyurethane is highly resilient and designed to last for a long time while providing a firm yet comfortable place to sit when used inside sofa cushions.

Memory Foam offers great orthopaedic support when used in your sofa cushions as the material is both dense and elastic. However, the material isn’t waterproof, something to keep in mind if you have kids or pets.

How to Refill Your Sofa Cushions

So you’ve chosen your sofa filling; now it’s time to refill your sofa cushions. Depending on the sofa cushions you have, this can be a relatively straightforward process, and our team at The Cushion Guys is here to help. With our expert step-by-step guide, even the saggiest sofa cushions will look good as new.

Step 1: Remove your sofa cushions from the sofa if you can. Don’t worry if your sofa cushions are attached to the sofa; these following steps can still be completed.

Step 2: Find the zip to open the cushion cover so that you can remove the existing filling. The filling in the cushion will vary depending on the age and type of sofa you have.

Step 3: If you have a solid filling like foam, you can run a vacuum cleaner nozzle over the cushions to remove lint or deteriorating foam that can cause bunching. If you have a loose filling like down or polyester, skip this step but check for any discolouration or mould and remove it before you refill the cushion.

Step 4: For solid foam filling, apply a sticky adhesive to the existing material and carefully wrap the new foam around the current cushion to pad it out, making sure you can still get it into the cushion cover as you go. For the loose filling, refill the cushion by pushing handfuls of material into the cushion. For a firmer cushion, push the padding down while refilling.

Step 5: Once you’re happy with the density of your cushion, go ahead and replace the cover and put it back on the sofa. Just like that, your sofa cushion is good as new and ready for daily use!
